Real World Use-cases

I am working to put together a comprehensive and up-to-date list of use cases where Solid has been used/deployed. If you have or know of a real-world use case, please use this space to advertise yourself!

Doesn’t need to be an extensive write-up (though some info helps), even just a link to the project would be great to know that it exists.

What will this be used for?

  • Helping identify good themes for future Solid Worlds, and see if it would be appropriate to go back to a more regular cadence.
  • Helping build out Jeff Zuckers catalog of Solid activities https://solidproject.solidcommunity.net/catalog/ (something I’m hoping ODI can administratively support going forward and having a collection of use-cases here would make a great starting point).
  • Helping make connections between related projects
  • Helping improve the visibility of your projects

This is quite related to Use cases, but wanted to start a new thread to get a good idea of what is out there now in 2024.

Thank you in advance!

I guess there’s only a possibility to share limited links in this forum, so I’ll add a couple and hope they are going through.

a) https://solidweb.org (NSS 5.8.3) (ca. 3900 user) this is held on a virtual server with shared virtual resources (see https://www.serverproject.de/files/solidweb_org_terms.txt )

b) https://solidweb.me (CSS 7.1.3) (ca. 700 user) this is held on the same machine as a) (see https://www.serverproject.de/files/solidweb_me_terms.txt )

c) https://teamid.live (CSS 7.1.3) a remote collective of Michiel, Alain, Yvo and me, fabulating and phantasizing about a pro organization and integrate payment of a cup of coffee.

I have a ttl list of providers I am aware of, its SolidOS Web App
but note d) there are included deprecated ones for historical reasons (sorted bottom) and e) its not functional linked data, because the subject urls of the triples are completely made up.

but human readable.
hope that helps.

Hi @jeswr

As you know ActivityPods is not fully Solid compliant yet (it should be on version 3.0) but I’m listing anyway 2 applications that I developed and that are used by real people in the area where I live. The third app (Mastopod) is newer and it’s not much used yet – there are still problems that we will address in the coming months.

Welcome to my place

The “Welcome to my place” app has been up and running since the end of 2021, and so far it has been used mainly in the Compiègne area (north of Paris), with a community of 600 users (It is called “Bienvenue chez moi” in French).

Its aim is to encourage people to organise meetings in their own homes. What sets it apart from other platforms is that the events are all private: you have to be personally invited to see the event description and register (events creator can also give you the right to invite your own contacts).

You might think that this restrictive system would reduce the number of participants, but on the contrary, receiving a personal invitation creates greater interest in the proposal. What’s more, people dare to suggest original topics for meetings, because they know who will see the invitation.

The network is based on trust. Guests can see who is taking part in the meeting (and sometimes they sign up just because it will be an opportunity to see a particular person again). As profiles are also private by default, you can only see people who are part of your network, the others being displayed as ‘Unknown’. At the end of the meeting, however, you can add these ‘unknown’ people (who have become known in the meantime!) to your contacts.

So the network that develops is based on real encounters. And if you want to propose a meeting yourself, you can invite people you trust, people you’ve already met on other occasions.

Note: A new homepage, with more explainations, will be released January.

Mutual Aid

Classified ads based on mutual aid, that can be shared within a trusted network.

“Mutual aid” is a classified ads application that is only visible to people who are part of your trusted network. Objects or services can be exchanged. Unlike most sites of this kind, which are very ‘business’ oriented, the main aim of this site is to help each other.

That doesn’t mean you can’t buy or sell in euros, but the focus is more on helping each others. We also offer the possibility of giving or bartering objects.

It is regularly used by the community that has been built around “Welcome to my place” in Compiègne.

Mastopod

A Mastodon-compatible app that saves all data in your Pod

https://mastopod.com/

Note: These applications in english rely on the mypod.store Pod provider, which at the moment regularly runs into problems and goes offline. Sorry if it is difficult to test at the moment. (The applications in French rely on another Pod provider that is more stable.)

I use Solid daily for:

  • Google Keep-like notes
  • Budget
  • Wiki’s
  • Issue tracker
  • Photo management
  • Movie tracker
  • Recipe management
  • Feed reader
  • Task management and timesheets
  • Alternative Google Drive and OneDrive UIs

Some of this is with well known apps but mostly I’m fairly tolerant of buggy experimental custom apps.
Solid makes it easy to have frontend-only single page web apps with just Solid as the backend.

I have been working on a front-end platform to experiment with Solid usecases : https://solidbench.dev .

It hosts in particular two usecases at this stage :

  • a retail usecase, where one can import their retail receipts into their pod, and then have various dashboards on their retail history
  • an annotation tool, based on W3C Web Annotation model, where you can author and share annotations on online resources

These developments have been demoed at the last solidcommunity.be event, you can check the presentation slides .

That’s great ! Would it be possible to share which app you are using specifically ?

We are working on enhancing the Solid UX and DX, and developing tools that bridge the gap between Solid users (who have a pod) and those who don’t. Our work include:

  • a pod provider with a user friendly UI ( a user-face fork of Penny ) .
    - integrating FedCM with Solid and advocating for the BYOIDP feature, allowing browsers to save a list of user-registered IDPs, which we believe can improve solid UX
    - developing a middleware to enable web apps to serve both Solid and non-Solid users ( wip )
    - creating a framework to quickly build solid app ( wip )

Hope I can soon provide link to the last two items

Thank you to everyone who has shared so far - keep them coming!

Especially interested in any domain specific apps/projects.

Are you interested in building on the last two items together ?
