All are invited to upcoming Solid Practitioners’ meetings on Indigenous perspectives on data sovereignty and knowledge sharing.

We will hear from :

* David White, a software developer and member of “Hapori Matihiko” - the Māori Digital Community

* Ed Edmo, a Native American elder, storyteller, poet, and educator.

Sounds like this was very interesting, learning, based on my experience working with fellow refugees in Uganda, I would have preferred joining the conversation, but now I am a new person here. Allow me to introduce myself,

My name is Muganuzi Mushongole Adonis, a Congolese refugee from the Democratic Republic of Congo living in Uganda, and the Founder and Executive Director of YAREN.

YAREN is a refugee-led non-profit organization working to bridge the gap between displacement and opportunities for refugee and host communities in Uganda through the JENGA JAMAA Project. Our work focuses on economic empowerment, skills development, digital innovation, youth and women’s leadership, mental health, peacebuilding, social cohesion, climate resilience, and WASH.

At YAREN, we believe refugees are not only people in need of support, but also powerful agents of change, innovation, and community transformation. Through partnerships and community-driven programs, we are committed to building hope, dignity, resilience, and sustainable opportunities for all.

We welcome collaboration, partnerships, resources, and support from individuals, organizations, donors, and institutions who share our vision of empowering refugee and host communities.

We have an ongoing entrepreneurship 1st cohort with 10 students about to end, and an ongoing English for Adults with 16 students.

We have an agricultural pilot initiative to start in the coming weeks and a Textile production initiative to start soon.

Thank you, Jeff. That means a lot, and I really appreciate the warm welcome to the community.

I would love to schedule a presentation at an upcoming Solid Practitioners meeting. We are not currently using Solid, but I think a conversation about YAREN’s work and its technical needs could be really valuable, both for us to learn what’s possible and for the community to hear how these tools might support refugee-led programs on the ground in Uganda. Some of the areas where I think Solid’s approach to data ownership and sovereignty could be especially relevant for us are managing student and beneficiary records across our entrepreneurship and English programs and giving displaced communities more control over their own data as we scale the agricultural and textile initiatives.

I’ll reach out to you on Matrix to find a time that works. Thanks also for sharing the recordings from the Indigenous knowledge sessions. I’m looking forward to watching those, since the themes of data sovereignty resonate strongly with the communities we work with too.
