I am also managing a Discourse forum and can recommend a couple of Theme Component plugins that you will find useful. See the screenshot below:
- Auto abbrify words - Create a glossary of terminology. Automatically adds mouseover explanatory texts to defined terms. Can be very helpful to newcomers and non-technical readers
- Hamburger links component - Add links to forum topics / external pages. We use it for Contribution guidelines and Help
- Header links component - Add additional icons next to the Search icon, i.e. to Twitter, Github and Inrupt site
